Deoxymethoxetamine
DMXE or Deoxymethoxetamine (also called 3D-MXE, Methoxetamine, and 3-Me-2′-oxo-PCE) is a dissociative drug of the arylcyclohexylamines chain family, developed as an analog of MXE and has similar effects (stimulating, dissociative, anesthetic effects). Deoxymethoxetamine (DMXE) is a new substance that has been tested in rodents and is still little studied but it is an NMDA receptor antagonist.
Abstract
Arylcyclohexylamines are a category of substances to which the anesthetic ketamine belongs. The arylcyclohexylamines have been reported to act as antagonists of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Several studies have shown that overdoses of 2-(methylamino)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-cyclohexanone (methoxetamine) can lead to health problems. Several illegal Japanese products have been found to contain MXE derivatives in recent years. As part of this study, we identified three MXE derivatives, 2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2-(propylamino)cyclohexan-1-one (methoxpropamine; MXPr), 2-(isopropylamino)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one (methoxisopropamine; MXiPr) and 2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2-(propylamino)cyclohexan-1-one (deoxymethoxetamine; DMXE)-2-(propylamino)cyclohexan-1-one.
Pharmacology
While phenethylamines without ring substitution usually behave as stimulants, ring substitution (as in MDMA) leads to a modification in the pharmacological properties. Ingestion of MDMA causes euphoria, increased sensory awareness and mild central stimulation. It is less hallucinogenic than its lower homolog, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA). The terms empathogenic and entactogenic have been coined to describe the socializing effects of MDMA. Following ingestion, most of the dose of MDMA is exterminated in the urine. Orometabolites are 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) and O-demethylated compounds. It takes two hours for a 75 mg dose to reach the maximum plasma concentration of around 0.13 mg/L after administering it.
The mode of use
If MDMA is taken as a tablet, it is usually consumed orally (ingested). However, if it is consumed as a powder, it can either be snorted, inhaled, or injected. Most Ecstasy users do not use the latter route, and it is very rare for them to do so.
Use in medicine
The therapeutic use of MDMA has declined over the years, despite its use in psychiatric counseling.
